Acoording to Melanie Reding, the educational coordinator for the Jacques Cousteau Educational Center in Egg Harbor Township the sea level at Atlantic City has risen 14 inches since 1912. She attributes this to global warming.
The real problem with rising seas in NJ is that 60% of our population is considered to be living in coastal regions. While the rising sea level doesn't pose any real threat to most of us Jerseyans if it continues on at about an inch every 10 years, it still is concerning.
Anyone who has been a regular down the Jersey Shore for most of their life, like me, can see the differences. The beaches just aren't as wide as they once were, especially in spots where the sand isn't replenished. This has got to be most concerning to those who not only live near the water but also make their livings there.
The Jersey Shore will always exist, I just hope it doesn't move too far inward. On second thought, if I stay where I am long enough maybe I won't have to buy a beach house, the beach may come to me.
