New Jersey's Worst Storm Ever

The weather in NJ is horrible today, rain, rain, and more rain. The governor, Chris Christie, has even declared a state of emergency to mobilize the National Guard and State Police in anticipation of a severe flooding problem.
However, no matter how bad we think the weather is today it pales in comparison to the worst storm on record in the state's history. You may be surprised by the fact that this storm struck the state in March. The date was March 12, 1888 to be exact. The storm lasted several days with not only significant snowfall but also winds in excess of 100mph.
By the time the storm was over 24 inches of snow had fell, with the wind creating snow drifts reported as high as 52 feet tall. The Great White Hurricane, as it was called, was responsible for 800 deaths and more than $25 million in property damage.
So while we get soaked today and deal with some flooding just think how much worse it could be. Afterall, this rain could be snow, and I don't know about you but I'm done with that this year, I hope!
