Christie Reforms Spark Record Retirements

More than 20,000 public employees put in for retirement in 2010, a jump of 60% over 2009. The total included police officers and teachers who face increased health care costs and smaller pensions due to reforms being pushed by Governor Chris Christie.
The governor is asking public employees to pay up to 30% of their own health insurance premiums starting with the next fiscal year. Also, currently public employees who have worked at least 25 years receive free medical benefits for life after they retire, something Christie is also looking to change.
This is a tough issue with no winners in the near future, but something has to be done. It's a shame this has become another reason for people to leave New Jersey. There are truly no winners.
