I worked a dead end job for more than 20 years, and when I say dead end I mean there was a 100 foot wall at the end of the street. I joined a well respected company, at the time but no longer, in it's industry in an entry level position. Through hard work and long hours I progressed up to a management position, where my pay was good, but not great.
Problem was the position I advanced to was pretty much the end of the line. The only people above me were two vice presidents and the president. Despite their poor performance in running the company, something made more and more evident with every passing day, the owner would never remove them. I had advanced as far as I could go.
After banging my head on the corporate ceiling for years, I parted ways with the company. My fiance had been presented with a great opportunity and my way of supporting her was to be the primary caregiver for our three year old son.
Since he was enrolled in preschool 3 days a week this gave me some free time. It was during this time that I started writing a blog. Sure I put the Google Adsense ads on it, but I wasn't looking to earn any money, just express my opinions. One day one of my blog posts generated a lot of interest. The post brought me comments supporting my position and opposing it. Most importantly, however, it lit the fire for me to do more writing.
I expanded my writing to anywhere I could pretty much get published. I have now settled into writing almost exclusively for Yahoo and my blogs. While I currently don't generate enough income from my writing to support my household by myself, it does provide really nice extra income. The internet is in desperate need for content and there are plenty of places to get started filling this need.
If you are a frustrated writer, opinionated, or are just looking for a way to earn some extra money, then writing for the internet may be for you. I will even let you in on some secrets. First, you need to be patient both people and the mighty search engines will take time to find you. In fact you may think no one is reading your stuff for a long time. Next thing you know your viewership will steadily increase.
The biggest thing I learned was to write what you know not what you think people want to read about. When I started I wrote about whatever was trending, problem was so did everyone else. I had to compete against many many blogs and articles. When I wrote about something local and of interest to me I got my biggest viewership. Write what you enjoy, it will translate into income.
Once you get comfortable in your writing the next most important thing is volume. Pay for individual articles can be low, however, multiply that by multiple articles and you will be surprised how fast and how much extra income you will be earning.
I have researched most work from home programs and the only one I truly found capable of generating any "real" money is writing. So if your a frustrated writer, have opinions you would like to share, or are just a good storyteller the writing for profit from home is something you might want to try. I am always here for advice on the subject so don't be afraid to ask and good luck.
