NJ State Senator Robert W. Singer is introducing a bill to bring the death penalty back to the state. Under the proposal anyone convicted of certain capital crimes including the killing of a police officer or a child under the age of 14 would be eligible for the death penalty. The bill comes in response to the killing of Lakewood police officer Christopher Matlosz, who was shot while sitting in his patrol car.
The bill has the support of Governor Chris Christie, but isn't supported by everyone. Critics cite the cost of keeping an inmate on death row, while the chances of an execution are minimal at best.
I agree with both points, we should bring back the death penalty, and actually use it. Of course it's not a deterrent, since criminals know there is basically no chance they will be executed. Too bad it's too late to get it reinstated to rid the world of the man who took Officer Matlosz's life.
