Monmouth County has suspended three transportation employees for calling in sick and the attending the pro-union rally in Trenton on Friday. The three are all members of CWA Local 1038 and work for the county's Senior Citzen Area Transport Service. Their absence left 174 developmently disabled adults waiting for buses that never came. The county had 14 other employees call out sick also, but no discipline has been announced for them.
There are two problems here. First why were only three suspended when 17 called out sick. Were they suspended because they were members of a union?
Secondly, there is no back up plan for bus drivers getting sick? What if the flu ran through the department and three drivers had to miss a week? People call out sick for all kinds of reasons, not having a contigency plan is unexcusable.
