The Camden City Council, on Tuesday, voted down a proposed 23% property tax increase. Those in favor said the increase would bring back to work up to 47 police officers and 13 firefighters who were recently laid off.
Seems the whole proposal was riding on the possibility of bringing back the laid off officers, however, it did not guarantee it. The city council probably saw this as a publicity stunt to get the measure passed knowing those laid off would probably not be rehired. They obviously know, also, that the residents of Camden, one of the poorest towns in NJ, simply cannot afford such an increase. Tax increases are not the answer. The city needs new rateables, new business, new ideas, and most of all new leadership.
