New Jersey, like most states, has laws still on the books that in this day and age seem strange if not just stupid. I'm sure at the time there were good reasons for them, although you really have to wonder were they enacted to address real problems or was a lawmaker just really annoyed.
The first law seems particularly strange for New Jersey, the Garden State. It is illegal to sell cabbage in the state on Sundays. What's behind this law, a desire to keep the state free of cabbage's byproducts on the day of rest? Was someone so annoyed by the smell or did someone come from a home where cabbage was on the menu every day and just needed a break?
The next law certainly comes from a time when it was unheard of to question the authority of a police officer. It is illegal to frown at a police officer. Can you imagine being arrested and your cellmate asks you what your in for? "I frowned at a cop man".
We all love ice cream, and apparently at one time in NJ it was thought to have medicinal benefits, at least in Newark. You see in Newark it is illegal to sell ice cream to anyone after 6 PM unless they have a note from their doctor. I can't get into see my doctor when I have the flu, let alone when I want some comfort food.
The next law is one that maybe we should really start enforcing. It is illegal to slurp soup. I have been in a few restaurants when I wish someone would come in and remove a noisy soup slurper at a table nearby. Next time I'm out to dinner I will be sure to keep 911 on speed dial.
The last law I want to mention could be bad news for notorious pickle lover, Snooki from MTV'S Jersey Shore, should she ever decide to come to Trenton NJ. In the capital of NJ it is illegal to throw a bad pickle into the street. I can't even imagine how littered the streets of Trenton must have been with bad pickles before this law came about.
So if you don't want big trouble in NJ make sure you don't start your Sunday trying to buy cabbage, then slurp your soup at lunch, throw your bad pickle into the street in Trenton, frowning as you pass a police officer, while trying to buy ice cream in Newark after 6PM without a doctor's note. Everything else is fine.
